First new generic top-level domain from Donuts will be the Chinese IDN for “games”
DURBAN, Republic of South Africa – Donuts Inc., a registry for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), said today it has formally entered into a registry agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the industry’s technical coordinator, to administer .游戏, an internationalized domain name (IDN) which translates to “games” in simplified Chinese characters.
The contract signing took place during ICANN’s 47th public meeting here. The agreement between ICANN and the industry’s largest (by number) applicant for new gTLDs is a landmark step toward formal delegation later this year of this and other new extensions.
“The current Internet namespace, like .COM, is worn out and needs new and specific options, particularly for underserved or developing areas that can use native script IDNs to increase Internet participation,” said Donuts CEO and co-founder Paul Stahura. “Donuts applauds ICANN for moving forward toward delegation with this important contracting step.”
The .游戏 new gTLD is the first of hundreds scheduled for introduction by Donuts over the course of the next year. Registrations in Donuts’ gTLDs will be available exclusively through accredited domain name registrars.
