Expired Domains Go Private on Godaddy.com.

Godaddy changed its policy on the whois information on expired domains. This move is to stop Domain Spammers from sending out emails to the owners of expiring domains. I get these all the time. Here is some information on what the deal is:

From Godaddy’s blog post:

We’re changing the way expired domain names’ contact information displays in the Whois database to fix an increasingly large issue that could affect you.

What’s the problem?

Domain investors often watch Go Daddy Auctions® for expired domain names of value. When they find domain names they want, they use the public Whois records to harass the current registrant into redeeming the domain name and selling it directly to the investor. Based on customer complaints, many investors participate in this practice, and some even hire outsourced teams.

The Solution:

We now hide the contact information for expiring domain names in the Whois database. Our system updates the registrant, administrative, and technical contact information so potential buyers can’t contact the domain registrant during expiration.

Here’s how private contact information displays in the Whois database:

Things you should know:
– The private contact information for Domains By Proxy® already displays for a domain name during expiration, we won’t change it.
– If you want to transfer a domain name away from us during the auto-renew grace period, we will automatically revert the private contact information to the original registrant information when you request the authorization code.
– We can revert private Whois information to the original registrant information at any time.
